Preventing Puget Sound shoreline erosion. Erosion occurs naturally on most of Puget Sound’s shoreline, shaping coastlines and creating beaches. The typical response to erosion has been the construction of bulkheads and seawalls — the armoring of the shoreline. Erosion on Washington's ocean coast. Erosion is also an important phenomenon. Coastal erosion may be caused by hydraulic action, abrasion, impact and corrosion by wind and water, and other forces, natural or unnatural. On non-rocky coasts, coastal erosion results in rock formations in areas where the coastline contains rock layers or fracture zones with varying resistance to erosion.

forests and trees provide some coastal protection and that the clearing of coastal forests and trees has increased the vulnerability of coasts to erosion (Figure ) — such as in Viet Nam (Mazda et al., ; Cat et al., ), Malaysia (Othman, ), Indonesia (Bird and Ongkosongo, ; Nurkin, ; Tjardana, ), Sri Lanka (Samarayanke, ), India (Malini and Rao, ;File Size: KB. Holmberg Technologies, Inc. specializes in natural beach renourishment and bluff restoration techniques which are cost effective alternatives to traditional methods (Dredging, Groins, Breakwaters, Seawalls, etc.), employed by coastal engineers in general and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in particular. Beach and coastal erosion ceases upon installation of the patented technology.

Southwest Washington is home to some of the most marine dependent communities in the nation. The local economy relies on healthy waters and intact coastal habitats that support fishing and shellfish aquaculture activities.

Fortunately, Washington’s outer coast has avoided many of the negative impacts associated with population growth and urbanization and still contains vast expanses of natural shoreline.

In coastal southwest Washington, there is an unusually large (largest along the Pacific coast) and thick Holocene sand barrier 38 km long by to km wide by 17 to 25 m thick. The coastal structure in this example is a large port with an extension greater than the width of the surf zone, but the structure could also be a set of tidal inlet jetties or a long groyne.

The coastal erosion for three different types of ports is also described in the article Port breakwaters and coastal erosion. Effects of Erosion and Accretion on Coastal Landforms New York Sea Grant Wayne County Cooperative Extension Route 88 North Newark, NY New York has a diverse shoreline along the Great Lakes that includes coastal landforms such as sand beaches, dunes, offshore bars, bluffs.

The objective of this book is to focus on the physical processes that cause coastal scientists and engineers have focused their research on the entire range of physical processes from the waves and the currents in the nearshore to the response of the beach, via sand transport, resulting in a changing coastal by: Publication type: Report: Publication Subtype: USGS Unnumbered Series: Title: Coastal erosion and accretion: DOI: / Year Published: Language: English.

The Washington state Department of Ecology says the fastest erosion on the West Coast is happening at aptly named Washaway Beach -- located between the southwest Washington towns of Grayland and Tokeland.

Most places threatened by erosion try to fight back. But the erosion at Washaway Beachis so rapid, the question now is to fight -- or retreat. First the ocean took a clam. The impact of coastal erosion has adversely affected the socioeconomic conditions of the coastal community worldwide.

The coastal environment is experiencing a wide range of natural and anthropogenic pressure in India. This study was carried out along the southwest coast of Kanyakumari, South India using multitemporal Landsat satellite images from to Cited by: The coast of the U.S. Pacific Northwest (PNW), the ocean shores of Washington, Oregon and Northern California, experience property impacts ranging from the erosion and flooding that occur during.

Coastal erosion and accretion Key message All the coastal EU Member States have problems with coastal erosion. Over 20% of the evaluated European coastline is affected. These problems could increase in view of the effects of climate change.

Defence of the coastline is a very ancient procedure to mitigate coastal erosion. The location of theFile Size: KB. /books books Thomas Telford Publishing /ceap3e COAST EROSION AND PROTECTION. COAST EROSION AND PROTECTION.

The 4, km long coastline of Washington State can be subdivided into 3 regions: the Pacific coast, the Strait of Juan de Fuca coast, and the inner coast of Puget Sound (Fig.

The Puget Sound region includes Hood Canal, a fjard or fiard (Snead ), on the west; on the east it is connected to Lake Washington and Lake Union by a man-made.

The earliest comprehensive study on coastal erosion is from Wang Wenhai, who in published “Genesis and Countermeasures of Coastal Erosion in China,” which comprehensively described the status of China's coastal erosion, analyzed the causes of coast erosion in China, initially putting forward countermeasures of coastal erosion (Wang, ).

For the past 50 years, erosion has afflicted Negril's beaches, as witnessed by 15 m of shoreline recession in the southern extremity of Long Bay (University of West Indies (UWI), ).Some sections are more affected than others, with the shore exhibiting an alternating pattern of intense erosion and constant accretion ().Nonetheless, the rate of erosion has been established at 1 m year −1 Cited by: 3.

Erosion and accretion are considered as the main coastal processes. The Nile Delta is suffering from erosion due to the construction of dams and barrages across the Nile River.
